Reivers Favorites of 2014
2014 was a fairly slow year for the Reivers as a band – perhaps the slowest since they reunited a few years ago. Then again, the year before was quite busy with the new album, so they’ve earned a well-deserved rest.
They played two shows (both in Austin) in 2014, and both shows included the new, as yet unrecorded song “Texas Never Will Be Wild Again”.
Here’s some of the music, books, movies, etc. some of the band enjoyed in 2014 (some new stuff, some older stuff):
John:
I’ve really enjoyed a couple of books recently – Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, and CivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders. Music-wise I’ve been binging on Chicago and I’m digging [the songs] “Evil” by Shovels & Rope and “Do You” by Spoon. Also re-watched a couple of fave movies recently – Broadway Danny Rose and Topsy-Turvy.
Kim:
I like that new Chuck Prophet record, Night Surfer. I read a bunch of books too, but none that seemed to light me on fire, like that time I read The Wind-up Bird Chronicle or Winter’s Tale. I’ve been reading Jung books and stuff about progressive pedagogy, which makes kind of a dull list…
I’ve been sucked into the whirling vortex of [TV shows] The Bletchley Circle and Peaky Blinders…I got kind of bored with Boardwalk Empire despite my crush on Steve Buscemi…
Eric:
John Wesley Coleman- The Love That You Own [music]
The Lego Movie [movie]
No No: A Dockumentary [movie]
The Knick [TV]
American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin [book]
Grendel Drone Commander (“Favorite noise making device”)
